TO SAY THAT PHYSICAL THERAPIST Shmuel Tatz is good for what ails
you is a gross understatement—just ask the throngs of musicians,
dancers, and athletes he’s treated at his Carnegie Hall
studio. “Professional musicians, dancers, and athletes don’t
have time to go from doctor to doctor,” says Tatz, who was
educated in Lithuania, Germany, Russia, and Israel, and has lived
in the US for 25 years. “They want to get better
right now with minimum side effects.”
Through a mix of yoga, osteopathy, acupuncture,
and physical and reflex therapy,
Tatz has kept clients like Mikhail
Baryshnikov, Susan Jaffe, Peter
Jennings, Lou Reed, Kathleen
Turner, and members of the Soviet Olympic team in fine form.
But an elitist he’s not: The bulk of his patients are “average
Joes” who come to him with everything from lower
back pain to carpal
tunnel syndrome to arthritis
to migraines. He
calls most of what he sees “happy injuries”—incurred
from leisure activities (yoga, golf, running) that leave the bodies
in need of a tune up—and prides himself on giving each client
as much time as is needed to get the job done properly. We feel
better already.
